‘That ’70s Show’ actor Danny Masterson gets 30 years to life in prison
According to the Los Angeles district attorney’s office, actor Danny Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison after a jury convicted him earlier this year of raping two women 20 years ago. The rapes, according to prosecutors, occurred in 2003, while Masterson, now 47, was acting in the hit comedy “That ’70s Show.”
Danny Masterson was convicted in May of raping a 28-year-old woman in April 2003 and a 23-year-old woman later that year. Both incidences occurred at Masterson’s Hollywood Hills residence.
When you raped me, you stole from me,” said one of the victim who Masterson was found guilty of abusing, according to media. “That’s what rape is, a theft of the spirit.”
The other woman remarked, “I knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came into contact with,” before Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo. I’m upset and genuinely apologetic. I wish I had alerted police on him sooner.
At the height of the #MeToo movement in 2017, Masterson was accused of rape for the first time. He rejected the allegations and claimed that all of the relationships were consensual.
After a three-year investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, charges were filed. Due to inadequate proof and the passing of the statute of limitations, prosecutors opted not to press charges in two other cases.
After Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo threw the book at him, Masterson, 47, displayed no apparent emotion. After Olmedo delivered the verdict, Masterson’s wife, Bijou Phillips, a model and actor who regularly attended her husband’s trials, quickly put on a pair of sunglasses. She stepped out of the courtroom quietly.
