Teenager Coco Gauff wins US Open 2023Coco Gauff becomes  the latest Black American woman to make a history on the most sacred grounds of U.S. tennis

In a thrilling comeback, world No. 10 women’s singles player Coco Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 2-6 6-3 6-2 in the women’s US Open final.
Gauff, who became overwhelmed with emotion after her win, said, “I feel like I’m in shock at this moment”.

After Gauff’s victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, the illustrious crowd erupted in cheers. Gauff, 19, becomes the first American teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams, a 23-time major champion, did it in 1999. The victory marked her maiden grand slam of her tennis career.

Gauff first thanked her parents, grandparents, and her brothers, one of whom had not responded to a FaceTime call from her immediately following the match, after she had cried tears of joy and hugged her parents as they too sobbed.

Gauff admitted that Venus Williams and Serena Williams “paved the way for me to be here” when asked about the significance of having become the third Black woman to win the women’s singles title. She also said that watching Sloane Stephens win the US Open in 2017 inspired her.

The Belarusian won easily, 6-4, 6-0, when Gauff and Sabalenka last faced off in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells in March. The final on Saturday, though, was an entirely distinct fight since Gauff had made significant strides in the six months since that loss.

Prior of the US Open in Cincinnati, the 19-year-old won the biggest WTA championship of her career, one of three victories she has this year.

In 2022, Gauff made it to the French Open final, where she was quickly defeated by Iga Witek. This was her second grand slam final.
