Plot
“No One Will Save You,” Brian Duffield’s newest feature, is a sci-fi horror picture with a lot of potential. Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) is disconnected from her social circle. She spends her days at home alone, creating trinkets, cooking, and dancing. However, her seemingly perfect life comes crashing down when an unearthly creature attacks her home, compelling her to confront her past and the reasons for her isolation.
The creative thinking in its core decision-making is “No One Will Save You”‘s greatest strength. The entire scene is built on a fantastic use of sound instead of one word of discernible dialogue. The first act deals with the invasion and uses diegetic sound to generate excellent tension. Common sounds like dial tones and a subtle creak in the floorboards constrict your chest as Brynn quietly moves through her home trying to elude the extraterrestrial.
This sequence is made more astonishing by Brynn’s cleverness. She executes every move with meaning, strategy, and intelligence. She reacts by fighting back. She’s a protagonist one can celebrate for rather than scoff at. Meanwhile, Duffield makes outstanding use of the house’s design to instill fear and create suspense. The beautiful whimsy of the house we’ve come to know in the daytime devolves into pit-of-the-stomach terror, from inventive utilisation of nooks and crannies to terrifying, distorted shadows through hammered glass.
